Good morning. We are continuing to dive into the word of God regarding God’s armor. So today as we take another step in being fitted, let us put on the helmet of salvation.
As I searched for what I thought was an appropriate photo in an attempt to catch the reader’s interest and make this post more creative, I came across hundreds of helmet pictures. There are helmets for everything and anything, especially in this day and age.
I remember as a kid, if it wasn’t an organized sport, we didn’t wear helmets for anything. Not for football, baseball, our bikes, skateboarding, and we never wore helmets when being pulled behind dad’s car on a sled when the roads were icy and snow covered! And somehow I/we survived those days.
Salvation has Come to the Command Center
But it’s not surprising that we value protection for our heads, our brains, our eyes, our mouth and ears. It’s our command center for most everything connected to who we are and what we do and how we do it. And the helmets of today are very personalized to reflect who we are, our personality.
I must emphasize, just like with our shield of faith (from yesterday’s blog post), that without God being a part of it (without the spiritual aspect) a helmet is just a helmet. But what we are talking about is the helmet of salvation. Let’s break it down.
Ephesians 6:13 & 17a niv
Our mind is a battlefield. It isn’t any wonder that Paul relates the helmet, which covers our brain, to salvation. I relate this mainly to our minds, our soul, the essence of who we are designed to be. When we put on the helmet of salvation, we are saving (salvation) our mind from the old thoughts and mindset of the world so that we CAN be who we were designed and meant to be.
And not only that, we are protecting ourselves from the ways of the enemy. Thoughts and mindsets of an evolving culture sounds good and may even look better than it sounds, but when not founded on Biblical foundations it will lead us down a dangerous path. The helmet protects us from such dangerous blows to our head and to our mind.
Ever notice someone when they are suiting up? The last thing they put on? The helmet. It is as if it is a signal of readiness. Bring it on.
Jesus is our Salvation – Do Not Take the Helmet Off
I know I over-emphasize this in other ways, but it is note-worthy. We shouldn’t have to put on our helmet daily. Putting it on signifies we took it off. Trust me, the enemy doesn’t care if you are sleeping. He seeks to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10). And here it comes….
If we are walking with Jesus in our every-day-walking-around-kind-of-life, and if Jesus is our salvation, then this quite literally means that we have the helmet of salvation on our heads. If (and there are a lot of ifs here) we separate ourselves from Jesus, we have then quite literally taken off the helmet of salvation. And if so, this shouldn’t be. You are leaving yourself in a highly vulnerable position.
Challenge of the Day: No matter the situation, no matter the circumstance, no matter how high the mountain or how low the valley, protect your mind, your thoughts, your head. Jesus is your salvation and Jesus is the living word. The word of God protects everything in your command center. The word of God is the source of power for your command center. So be it!
