“Today Jesus, I depend on you. You are my all in all. I praise your holy name.”
John 1:1-3; 14a niv
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.
14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.
This is one of my favorite chapters and some of my favorite verses in the Bible. I think because it is such an amazing and mind blowing thing to think and know that God SPOKE…and it was. And what God spoke was Jesus….Jesus was/is the Word, and that Word….just like that, became flesh….a human being. How powerful His word was – His word was/is Jesus!
Jesus in Sandals – Who Was Jesus?
Let’s spend a moment focusing on Jesus:
- When Abraham sacrificed his son, it was a picture of God sacrificing His Son: “Abraham…offered up Isaac…He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead.”
- “For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
- the Bronze Serpent: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”
- “Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
- “Adam is a type of Jesus… who was to come.”
- The Passover Lamb: “For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”
- The rock that accompanied Israel in the wilderness: “[Israel] drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.”
- Jesus’ body with the veil in the temple that when “torn” on the cross revealed the access believers now have to the Father: “[We have] a new and living way [to God] which [Jesus] consecrated for us, through the veil, [which] is, His flesh.”
A Shadow of Jesus
You may have noticed a connection here. Yes, these are old testament “shadows” of Jesus. This is a very small window or view of what all the Old Testament says and shows us about Jesus Christ. So powerful, so revealing, and so vivid.
What is your image of Jesus. Is He just a shadow of the old testament? Is He the one from long ago that walked around in a robe and doing good things back then? Or is it Jesus in Sandals and just a part of stories from the past? What is Your Image of Jesus – is it Jesus in sandals?
God’s people expected nothing short of a Glorious King coming to justly rule the world with great love, power and authority. And no other has been greater, including Julius Caesar, Joseph II, Queen Elizabeth I, Charlemagne, and even Abraham Lincoln, or any king before or any king since. But back then, that’s the image many had of Jesus, that’s what they had hoped for in the Christ.
It’s Friday and Sunday’s Coming!
With the Easter Holiday in full swing (Palm Sunday, Ash Wednesday, maundy Thursday – washing of the feet and the Last Supper, Good Friday, the Passover Celebration, Holy Saturday, the Celebration of the First Fruits – and dare I say the Easter Bunny, Easter eggs and lots of chocolate – who is Jesus to you? What are you focused on during all these celebrations? Are you focused on Jesus, the lamb of God? Watch the lamb…
Jesus in Sandals – What is Your Image of Jesus?
What is your image of Jesus? Is He still in sandals and your God of 2000 years ago? Do you know only of Him back then from those glorious Sunday School stories from the Bible?
I pray that you know Jesus in your everyday life, in your every-day-walking-around-kind-of-life.

Daniel Carpenter says
It was in the summer of 1975 that God opened my eyes, convicted me of my sin and I put my faith in Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Hallelujah. Jesus became alive to me in a whole new way. “And He is alive in my life today”

It certainly is John! It’s hard to believe I am 41 years old. I should be a lot further along than I am, but the Lord’s mercy and grace is amazing to have brought me this far! Coming up on your 47th birthday! Thanks for the great example you are to me and many others!
