This is about me. Not you, not them, not the other, but for me. I know more than you about what I know. And what I know is what matters. It is my way or the highway!
What Is The Meaning of This?
It really means take it or leave it, as the highway refers to the road the listener should go down if they don’t agree with the one speaking. The highway is a fast track out of here and is what the speaker is demanding, “If you don’t like what I am saying, hit the road and do it fast!”
What is implied when the term is used? When used by a bossy person you, are expected to agree or ‘hit the highway’. That is, no discussion is necessary or allowed – like it or lump it!
The Way
The way has been used in many ways, including the way I am using it…in a way. Here are a few others:
- Go Your Own Way
- Highway to Hell
- Go all the way
- They want it in a bad way
- In a big way
- In a familiar way
- It cuts both ways
- No way
- The only way to go
- Out of the way
- It can go either way
- That’s the way the ball bounces
- That’s the way the cookie crumbles
- That way
- This way
- Two-way street
- Way down
- That is way off base
- Way out
- Way to go…and many more.
Elvis sang Frank Sinatra’s song I Did It My Way. I hope it worked out for the both of them in the end.
Watch Out for Detours
The way it was going, I knew it was going to lead to this. There is no other way. So I must tell you the way of Jesus. The way of Jesus is paved with love. Along that way, there are many stops of grace, mercy, compassion, rest, renewal, and more.
I picture that GPS when it’s focused on the shortest or quickest route. You decide to click the search button to see what is along the way. It’s all good. The way isn’t easy. There are potholes, flat tires, overheating, and dangerous sections without guardrails, all along the way.
And watch out for the detours. They can lead to some scary areas. But when we get back along our way, we can apply what we learned from those detours. That can then help us along the way, and many times down a better way.
The way of self-reflection, the inner self, an intellectual, other (non-Christ-centered) religions, and ‘plain ole being good’ (on your own merit) is a slippery path. Those ways can and will lead you stranded on the side of the road, stuck in the mud, or with an overheated blown engine that is going nowhere. There is no way to get there when the road has no foundation. It crumbles beneath you along the way.
Jesus is the Way
Read this conversation between Jesus and Thomas:
4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
John 14:4-7 NIV
I am not an intellectual, but I am a learner (number 3 on my strengths list). And what I have learned is that Jesus, during the time He was on earth, is a historical fact. I’ve also learned that He was not a liar or a lunatic. I challenge you to find out for yourself.
Because here’s the deal. If Jesus is who He said he was; and if He is not a liar; nor is He a lunatic; then we can’t ignore what He says and offers to us. Either we decide we are going to follow Him along the way, or we decide that we are going to go along on our own way.
He Is The WayMaker
Not only is He the way, but He is also the WayMaker. Whether you are on the way, or you get off track, if you get stuck or if you are in a rut, or if there seems like there is no way, He will make a way for you!
Challenge of the Week
Assess where you are in life. Are you going the way of the world? Are you going your own way? Maybe you just need to recenter. Or maybe it’s time to get on your way by allowing Jesus to lead the way for you. Allow Him to make a way for you, no matter where you are in life. Make that adjustment on your path this week, even today. So be it!
