Our Dependence On God

December 30, 2024 by Scott Ramsey

Well, this will be the last post I do for 2024. I’ve had great times connecting with family and friends over the past week and a half. It was a great time of refreshment and re-energizing. To end this year and kick off 2025, we will focus on our Dependence on God.  This could turn into quite the series with some thoughts God has dropped in my heart.  We’ll see where this goes as I write it out.  Let’s get started!

our dependency on God as displayed by hands of surrender
God wants us to depend on Him.

Lamentations 3:22-26 AMP

It is because of the Lord’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed,
Because His [tender] compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;
Great and beyond measure is Your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion and my inheritance,” says my soul;
“Therefore I have hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him.”

The Lord is good to those who wait [confidently] for Him,
To those who seek Him [on the authority of God’s word].

It is good that one waits quietly
For the salvation of the Lord.

Depending On Him In The Storms

This passage invites us to lean into the unmatched reliability of God. As I reflect on our dependence on Him, I’m reminded of a story from Juan Carlos Ortiz’s Living with Jesus Today.

Ortiz recounts the disciples on the Sea of Galilee during a fierce storm. While they panicked, Jesus—completely unfazed—was napping. When He woke up, He simply commanded the storm to be still. Think about it: for Jesus, calming the sea was as effortless as dipping your finger into a glass of water to stop ripples.

He Simply Is

It’s astounding, isn’t it? To us, such an act feels monumental, but for God, it’s no big deal. He is omnipotent and unshakably dependable. Unlike us, He doesn’t try to be dependable or merely want to be—He simply IS. He is faithful, steadfast, and unwavering. These are solid reasons for us to put our dependence on God.

To us and the disciples, we are amazed at what Jesus did.  But think about it, nothing is too small or too big for Him.  We are but a very small spec in the cosmos. Check out how big the universe is, and how small we are in comparison.

Mindshift

Here’s a perspective shift: You’ve probably heard the saying, “It is what it is.” While I’m not fond of that phrase, let’s tweak it: “He is Who He is.” That, I love. God doesn’t just do dependable things—He IS Dependability.

Challenge of the Week

Dependence means trusting in someone who is always there. So let’s reflect:

  1. Think of someone in your life you rely on. Write down a few bullet points explaining why you trust them.
  2. Now, do the same for God. List the reasons you can count on Him.
  3. Finally, take it one step further—tell God you’re leaning on Him today for those very reasons.

Pray this with me:
“Father, thank You that I can rely on You in the big storms of life and the small, everyday moments. You are constant, dependable, and faithful. Today, I place my trust in You. As your word says, “True love knows no fear.” I depend on You completely. So be it!”

NOTE: Join me in the 31-Day Proverbs Challenge starting New Year’s Day. One chapter of Proverbs each day through the 31st of January, starting of course with chapter 1.
