We’ve all heard it said: “The grass is greener on the other side.” And honestly, that might be true…if you look hard enough. Somewhere on God’s green earth (no pun intended), you can probably find a patch of grass that looks a little greener than your own.
We’ve all done it. Whether it’s a job, a relationship, a house, or even a church. We’ve looked across the fence and thought, “That looks better than what I have.” Another job. Someone else’s partner. Another neighborhood. Another congregation. But over time, I’ve come to believe something different:
“The grass is greener where you water it.“

The truth is, it’s a grand illusion. You are being enticed! So often, we chase what looks greener instead of cultivating what God’s already given us. It’s easy to look around and think someone else’s life, career, or marriage and spouse looks better — more fruitful, more exciting, more “blessed.”
Reality
The reality is, we’re only seeing the surface.
We see the green.
We rarely see the roots — or the watering it took to get there.
And many times, the roots are shallow. But because it looks greener, you jump the fence and then find out it isn’t all you had hoped for…maybe even worse.
What we’re drawn to is often a grand illusion.
We’re enticed by the shine of someone else’s story instead of tending to our own.
The Watering
In every season, God invites us to water the soil He’s placed us in — our faith, our family, our relationships, our work.
But growth doesn’t happen by comparison; it happens by consistency.
Grass doesn’t grow greener because it’s different ground – it grows greener because someone cared for it.
Daily. Patiently. Faithfully.
Carmen and I just watched a movie last night called The War Room.
How have we never heard of this before? It came out in 2015!
But wow, what a powerful reminder of what it means to make your grass greener where you are. It’s such a vivid picture of tending your spiritual ground through the Word, prayer, and intentional time with God.
Because the same is true in our spiritual lives.
No Short Cuts
You can’t microwave maturity or outsource intimacy with God.
There are no shortcuts.
If you want deep peace and strong roots, fruit that lasts, you have to water your own soul.
Your own life.
In His Word.
With prayer.
With worship, gratitude, and obedience.
And here’s the part we often miss:
God won’t grow what we won’t water.
I’ll even go a step further. He can’t grow what we refuse to water.
Not because He isn’t able, but because He won’t override our will.
God doesn’t force growth; He partners with our desire.
You can’t ask for growth in a place you’re neglecting.
You can’t crave fruit from roots you’re not feeding.
When we take time to nurture the soil of our spirit, God takes care of the growth.
The Reflection
Maybe the “other side” you’ve been looking at isn’t really greener.
It’s just an optical illusion, a trick of perception.
The world, through media and marketing, constantly tells us the grass is greener somewhere else.
For example, for guys, it might be the ad for the newer, bigger truck. But it’s not really about the truck, is it? It’s about the image — the perfectly staged scene with the sun hitting just right, the open road ahead, and, of course, the woman draped across the hood.
It’s a lie dressed up as a lifestyle.
The message beneath it whispers, “Buy this, chase that, move there… and life will be better.”
But before you assume your calling, your marriage, your business, or your season is dry and withering, pause and ask yourself:
Have I been watering where I am?
Watering looks like prayer when you don’t feel like praying.
It looks like gratitude when the answers still haven’t come.
It looks like faithfulness in the small things when the big things still feel far away.

Don’t envy what someone else has grown, optical illusion or not. Nurture what God has planted in you. It’s time to Tend…to your growth.
Challenge of the Week:
Each day this week, choose one way to “water” your current season: Be in the Word daily – start small with just a couple of minutes; Pray intentionally over where you are; Speak gratitude instead of comparison; Do one small act of faithfulness/kindness where you’re planted. Watch how the landscape of your heart begins to change. So be it.

The Watering

Daily watering through the Word and gratitude strengthens roots and produces lasting fruit.

Watering takes time — but consistent faithfulness always leads to growth in God’s timing.

God Won’t Grow What We Won’t Water
God partners with our effort — He brings the growth, but He honors the watering.

Action is part of watering — faithfulness activates growth.

Staying connected to Christ through prayer and obedience allows God to do the growing.
