The Grass Is Greener But…

“Maybe it would be better over there.”  You may have seen my post back in November of 2025, on The Grass is Greener.  Well, this is part 2. “The grass is greener but…” doesn’t mean we are in the wrong place.  It just means the grass isn’t greener where we are.

We might think that maybe it would be better over there…

The grass isn't greener but it sure does look good over there from here.
Sure looks good from here!

Another role.
Another pace.
Another environment.
Another version of this same life… just a little easier.

We usually dress it up a little nicer than that.

We say:

  • “I think I’m ready for something new.”
  • “I feel like I’ve outgrown this.”
  • “Maybe God is leading me somewhere else.”

And sometimes He is.

But sometimes…
We’re not being led away.

Are We Just Tired, or Just Not Up For The Challenge

There’s a subtle shift that happens when fatigue sets in. We stop asking, “What is God doing in me here?” And we start asking, “Where would this feel easier?”

Challenges make us feel tired even before we try to take them on. And tiredness has a voice.  And if we’re not paying attention, it starts to sound like wisdom.

But Scripture doesn’t tell us to run when we’re weary. Jesus says something very different:

Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

He doesn’t say:  “Go somewhere else.” He says, “Come to Me.”

The Grass Looks Greener From a Distance

There’s something about distance that makes things look better than they are.

We imagine:

  • less pressure
  • more alignment
  • more clarity
  • more peace

But we rarely factor in this truth:

Wherever we go… we bring ourselves with us.

Our patterns.
Our expectations.
Our fatigue.

In other words, maybe it’s not the place or the people. Maybe it’s you or me. Scripture gives us a different picture of growth.

Psalm 1:3

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water… whose leaf does not wither.

The tree doesn’t chase greener ground. It stays planted… and draws from the right source.

What If It’s Not the Place?

What if the tension you’re feeling isn’t a signal to leave…but an invitation to realign, learn, and grow? Jesus says:

John 15:4

Remain in me, as I also remain in you… apart from me you can do nothing.

Fruit doesn’t come from relocation. It comes from abiding. And sometimes, when we’re tired or too challenged, we confuse:

  • discomfort with misplacement
  • pressure with misalignment
  • fatigue with “am I in the right place?”

But those aren’t always the same thing.

To Be Honest

Just so you know, I hate when people say, “To be honest.” As opposed to being dishonest? Hmm, well, okay.

So honestly…sometimes it’s not that the grass is greener. It’s that I’m tired of tending the ground I’m in.

Tired of:

  • showing up
  • The boss
  • The “Karen” (sorry if you are reading this, Karen)
  • carrying responsibility, many times extra responsibility
  • navigating expectations, especially when those expectations aren’t clear
  • staying present when it would be easier to disengage
  • half-hour meetings that last two hours

And in that space, “somewhere else” starts to feel like relief.

How God Actually Renews Us

Scripture doesn’t tell us to push through exhaustion. It tells us something wiser in a quiet voice:

Isaiah 40:31

Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

Renewal doesn’t come from changing locations. It comes from reconnecting with God. Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do isn’t make a big decision…

  • It’s slowing down
  • Rest
  • Return

If you’ve been looking at the other side lately, pause and think through it…

Before you move…
before you decide…
before you assume the answer is somewhere else…

Come back to Jesus.

Let Him meet you in your tiredness.
Let Him restore what’s been drained.
Let Him realign what’s been stretched.

When you are struggling, pray for God to give you His eyes – to see others as He sees them.

Because sometimes the grass is greener on the other side. But that doesn’t mean it is necessarily better or where you are supposed to be.

Sometimes…you need water where you are.  And the good news is, God is that living water.

John 4:14

But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Challenge of the Week

Instead of asking: “Where would this be easier?” Try asking: “Where is God inviting me to stay close to Him right now?” Because the goal isn’t greener grass. The goal is deeper roots. So be it.
