The Storm Didn’t Change

Imagine two storms.  You’re walking through both of them. The storms are the same – the storm didn’t change. In the first storm, the wind howls so loud it drowns out your own thoughts. The rain hits sideways — stinging, relentless. Every step feels heavier than the one before. You can barely see what’s ahead, and the darkness presses in like a living thing. Fear settles in your chest. You tell yourself, “If I can just get through this… if I can just make it to the other side.”

Has anybody else ever felt that way? Or is it just me? Then there’s the second storm.

The storm didn't change, you did.
Is it the storm or is it you?

Same rain. Same wind. Same darkness.

But this one feels different.
There’s a calm inside it — not around you, but within you. The wind still blows, but it doesn’t shake you like before. The rain still falls, but it somehow feels lighter. You still can’t see the whole path, yet your next step is clear.

The storm didn’t change.
You did.

Philippians 4:7

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

The Difference Maker

Why does the second storm feel so different?
The thunder still rolls. The wind still blows. But something inside has shifted.

There’s a special kind of peace that only comes from obedience.  That’s the differentiator.

It doesn’t come when everything makes sense, or when all the pieces fall neatly into place. It comes in the quiet that follows surrender.  It’s when you finally stop striving to figure everything out and simply trust that God’s got it.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

In my life, there have been many moments when God asked me to take a step that didn’t make sense at the time. The outcome was uncertain, the path wasn’t clear, and I couldn’t see how it would all work together. But each time I said “yes,” even with shaking hands and hesitant faith, peace eventually followed.

Not the kind of peace that comes from control, but the kind that settles in when you realize God’s been in control the whole time.

Obedience is Better Than Sacrifice

The phrase “obedience is better than sacrifice” means that following God is more important than making personal sacrifices. True devotion doesn’t come from empty rituals or self-serving actions (sacrifices) — it comes from a surrendered heart.

Oftentimes, the mindset behind sacrifice is that someone owes you something.  We might not ever say it, but I sacrificed for them…they owe me!  And, sacrifices are made to appease.

Throughout history, people have made sacrifices to try to earn favor, to bargain with the gods, or to ease their guilt. From ancient Egypt to Mayan temples, people gave what they had, sometimes even human lives, hoping their offerings would buy peace.

But obedience doesn’t work that way.

1 Samuel 15:22a

To obey is better than sacrifice…

The Trust Factor

Obedience isn’t a transaction — it’s trust. There’s no bargaining, no “But look what I gave up, God.” True obedience is surrender.

Obedience puts and keeps control in God’s hands.  And that is where peace begins.

Obedience doesn’t always bring instant clarity. Sometimes it brings quiet. And that quiet can feel uncomfortable at first.

You take the step God asks of you, and then… nothing seems to happen. The door you expected to open stays shut. The answer doesn’t come right away. The silence can make you wonder, “Did I miss it?”

But often, that silence is where God does His best work.

He’s moving behind the scenes. He’s setting things in motion, aligning people, shaping circumstances, and preparing hearts. What looks still to us is never still to Him.

I get weird thoughts sometimes, but can you imagine God leading His people out of Egypt, standing before the Red Sea, and saying, “Well… I didn’t plan for that!”

Of course not. Because God never says, “Now what?”
He already knows what’s next… even when we don’t.

Psalm 46:1–2

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way…

He is always ahead of us.

The Peace That Follows

Obedience might not calm the storm, but it will calm your soul within it.

True peace doesn’t depend on what’s happening around us, like coming to a perceived dead end at the Red Sea.  It grows from the One who’s working within us.

When you obey, even when it doesn’t make sense, you step out of your own strength and into His. That’s where peace lives.  Not in control, but in confidence that the God who called you to step is the same God who’s already preparing what comes next…like parting the Red Sea.

Peace comes when we stop managing outcomes and start trusting the One who holds them.

A Thought to Take With You

If you’ve recently taken a step of obedience and things still feel uncertain, don’t rush to fill the silence.

Challenge of the Week:

Each day, take a few quiet moments to thank God for what He’s doing behind the scenes – even if you can’t see it yet. When the waiting feels long or the next step unclear, whisper this simple truth: “God, I trust that You are still working.” Let that trust become your peace. So be it!
