There are moments in life when what God asks of us doesn’t seem to make sense, at least not yet. Maybe He’s asking you to take a step forward when you can’t see the next one. Maybe He’s asking you to forgive someone who hasn’t said they’re sorry. Or to give when resources feel tight. Or to stay when everything in you wants to run.
Obedience often doesn’t look logical in the moment. It looks risky. It looks uncertain. And it looks like stepping into a foggy path where you can only see one or two feet ahead.
But that’s the thing about faith. It isn’t built on what we can see. It’s built on whose word we trust – His word.
The Lessons
When Jesus walked across the water, through the wind and waves, and said to Peter, “Come,” all Peter had to do was take a step out of the boat. There were no “water-walking instructions” for Peter to review first.
Peter took that step.
Matthew 14:29
“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
When God called Abraham, He didn’t hand him a map. He simply said, “Go.”
No destination details. No timeline. And, no clear explanation. Just a direction and a promise.
Abraham went.
Hebrews 11:8
By faith Abraham obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
He trusted that even though the journey didn’t make sense, the One leading Him did.
That’s the hard part about obedience. It requires surrender before clarity. It means trusting that the One who sees the whole picture knows what He’s doing with the piece we’re holding.
I can look back on seasons in my own life. There were seasons when God’s direction felt completely upside-down — like He was rewriting the plan I thought made sense. I can see now that those steps of obedience became turning points. Each one drew me closer to who God was shaping me to become. Even in the times when I was missing it.
The Challenge of Faith
Obedience isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about saying yes before you see the results.
Sometimes we wait for peace before we move. But often, peace comes after we obey. It’s on the other side of where the steps are leading to. As we become better at responding, the peace more readily comes during the journey, and not just after we get to the other side.
The truth is, obedience doesn’t always make life easier, but it always makes life clearer. Because it aligns us with God’s will, not our own.
And in time, what doesn’t make sense now will make perfect sense later.
A Thought to Take With You — and a Challenge for the Week
Think about one area where God’s been nudging you — a decision, a conversation, a next step you’ve been hesitating to take because it doesn’t all add up yet.
Challenge of the Week
Take that step. Determine what that step is.
Even if it’s small, take it. Your faith will grow as you put it into action.
Move forward with the trust that God isn’t asking you to understand everything, but just to follow Him through it. He’s already ahead of you, preparing the way. So it is!
