It all started in Nicaragua. In 2018, Carmen was on a mission trip when the children kept talking about a place they wanted her to see called the Mariposa Sanctuary. Based on this, today’s post will be about the butterfly effect.

So Carmen went with the kids to visit the local zoo, which was honestly a rather sad experience. But the butterfly sanctuary? That was something entirely different.
Carmen described it as one of the most beautiful places she’d ever experienced. It wasn’t just the butterflies. It was the entire atmosphere, the beauty, and the sense that she was experiencing something extraordinary.
And it was transformative.
And while that experience would stay with her, neither of us could have imagined how it would become part of our story three years later.
Sometimes God gives us a glimpse of tomorrow through something beautiful today.
An Hour Before Closing
Fast-forward to September 27, 2021.
Carmen and I were just an hour away from closing on our new home in Weeki Wachee, Florida. We were purchasing a beautiful property on two and a half acres in the country. But from the beginning, we believed this was about more than buying a house.
We sensed God inviting us into something bigger.
He was giving us an opportunity to love people. To welcome them. To create a space where others could experience something meaningful.
We didn’t know exactly what that would look like. We certainly didn’t have all the details figured out. But we believed God had led us there. And then we pulled into the property.
Butterflies were everywhere!
Mariposas (Spanish for butterflies).
For Carmen, it was an immediate connection to that extraordinary experience in Nicaragua three years earlier.
And right then, she knew. Mariposa had to be part of the name.
The other half, Chateau, was a nod to our country home, with an additional personal connection to the Spanish and French influences woven into her name. And just like that, Chateau Mariposa had its name.
But looking back, I believe there was something much more meaningful happening than simply naming a property.
The Beauty of God’s Timing
Have you ever experienced something that seemed meaningful in the moment, only to discover years later that it had become part of something much bigger?
I think we sometimes expect God to reveal His purposes all at once. We want the complete picture. The beginning, middle, and ending. But that’s rarely how life unfolds.
Sometimes we experience something beautiful without knowing what it might mean for tomorrow.
Sometimes God allows a moment to take root in our hearts long before we recognize how it connects to another season.
And sometimes, years later, something as simple as a butterfly reminds us of where we’ve been and what God has been doing along the way.
Ecclesiastes 3:11
He has made everything beautiful in its time.
Not necessarily in our time. In His.
More Than a Name
As Chateau Mariposa has continued to develop, I’ve been thinking about the meaning behind those butterflies.
A butterfly is one of nature’s most beautiful illustrations of transformation. And isn’t that what God has been doing in our lives?
We thought we were buying a home. We thought we were building a place where people could gather, celebrate, and experience hospitality. And we were.
But somewhere along the way, God was also transforming us. Teaching us patience. Stretching our faith. Deepening our dependence on Him. Showing us that loving people often requires more than opening our doors.
It requires opening our hearts. Perhaps that’s the most beautiful part of the story.
What began as a transformative experience for Carmen in a butterfly sanctuary became part of the name of a place where we now hope others experience love, beauty, encouragement, and meaningful connection.
And the story is still unfolding.
A Thought to Take With You
Sometimes God plants something beautiful in our hearts long before we understand where it will take root.
Don’t underestimate the meaningful moments along your journey. You may not understand their significance today, but one day you might look back and recognize how they became part of a much bigger story.
Challenge of the Week
Think back to an experience in your life that left a lasting impression. Maybe it was a conversation, an unexpected encounter, a moment in nature, or a time when you sensed God’s presence in a special way.
Ask yourself: Could God be using that experience to shape something in my life today?
And perhaps more importantly: How can I take what God has done in my heart and use it to love and encourage someone else? So Be It!
A Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the beautiful ways You work throughout our lives, often long before we understand what You’re doing. Help us recognize Your presence in both the extraordinary and ordinary moments. Continue transforming our hearts so that what You do in us becomes a blessing to those around us. And may our lives become places where others experience Your love. In Jesus’ name, So Be It.
