John 1:1–3, 14 (NIV)
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made… The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”

When God Spoke… Everything Changed
This passage has always stopped me in my tracks. Because it reminds me of something almost too big to fully grasp:
God spoke… and it was.
And what He spoke—was Jesus.
Not just words.
Not just creation.
But The Word.
Jesus was there in the beginning.
Jesus was the Word.
And then—just like that—
The Word became flesh.
God didn’t stay distant. He stepped into our world.
Into our brokenness.
And, into our pain.
Then, into our everyday life.
Jesus Was Always There
Long before Bethlehem…
Long before the cross…
Jesus was already being revealed.
All throughout the Old Testament, we see shadows—glimpses—of Him:
- Abraham offering Isaac → a picture of the Father offering His Son
- Jonah in the fish → three days pointing to resurrection
- The bronze serpent lifted up → healing through looking up in faith
- The bread from heaven → Jesus, the true Bread of Life
- Adam → a foreshadowing of the One to come
- The Passover Lamb → sacrificed for salvation
- The rock in the wilderness → sustaining life
- The torn veil → access to the Father through His body
These weren’t random moments.
They were signposts. Every one of them pointing forward to Jesus.
A Shadow… or Someone Alive?
So let me ask you something, honestly:
What is your image of Jesus?
Is He just a shadow from the Old Testament?
A figure from history?
A man in sandals walking dusty roads 2,000 years ago?
Or…
Is He alive in your life today? Because that’s where everything changes.
They Expected a King… But Got a Savior
In Jesus’ time, people expected a ruling King.
Someone powerful.
Someone political.
And, someone who would overthrow empires.
And while history has seen great leaders—
from Julius Caesar
to Charlemagne
to Abraham Lincoln—
No one compares to Jesus.
Because He didn’t come just to rule nations.
He came to redeem hearts.
It’s Friday… But Sunday’s Coming
Easter reminds us of the full story:
Palm branches.
The Last Supper.
The washing of feet.
The cross.
The silence of Saturday.
And then…
Resurrection!
We celebrate a lot this season—traditions, gatherings, even chocolate.
But don’t miss this:
Watch the Lamb. Jesus is not just part of the celebration. He is the reason for it all.
More Than “Jesus in Sandals”
So I’ll ask it again—
What is your image of Jesus?
Is He just someone you learned about? Or someone you walk with?
Because He didn’t come just to be remembered. He came to be known. Not just back then. But now. In your everyday, walking-around life.

Challenge of the Day
When did Jesus become real to you? For me, it was at a youth camp in Vero Beach, Florida—April 2, 1980. And I can still say today: He’s alive in my life today. I’d love for you to share yours in the comments, when it happened… and that He’s alive in your life today! So be it.
A Final Note
If you’ve never experienced a personal relationship with Jesus, or you’re not sure what that even looks like – Reach out. You can contact me at Scott@youreverydaylife.org. This isn’t just a belief. It’s a journey, a journey into eternity with God Almighty. And it’s one you will never regret.
January 28, 2017 with Eleanor (who’s family had been praying for me for over a year) in the Terre Haute Brew Pub. We were talking, and I don’t remember exactly about what, but Eleanor asked me, “Do you want to do this”? And I knew what He was asking me through her. “Yes”, I said. I was 46.
And although I don’t remember what we were talking about…up to that point, I’ll always remember the weight I felt lifted off of me in that life-changing moment.
Your life was forever changed. And not too long after that, mine was, too! Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Carmen.
